This will help you communicate with your neighbours, understand your surroundings, and decipher the information that you need to know about living in this part of the world. Also, being able to converse with the local people that you will meet while at your property in Portugal is a wonderful way to make new friends and start to feel at home here.

If you are already taking Portuguese lessons, this is a great start. Whether you are learning at a school, through an online course, or by yourself with an audio CD, you are on the right track to learning the language before moving to your Portugal property. However, there are a few other things that you can do to supplement your learning and become fluent in Portuguese even quicker. Here are three ways that you can improve your Portuguese beyond your language lessons:

1. Listen to Portuguese radio and television.
Before you move, and also when you are settled in your property in Portugal, keep your radio and your television tuned to local Portuguese channels. You can even have it on in the background while you are doing other things. Even if you cant understand every word yet, listening to the language will help your brain pick up the cadence and rhythm and become subconsciously accustomed to it. You will be amazed at how much more you absorb just by being exposed to the language as background noise throughout the day.

2. Label items in your house with the Portuguese words.
Get yourself a label maker or a set of small blank stickers, and label everything that you can in and around your real estate in Portugal with its Portuguese name. Place a label on your chair that says “cadeira” and on your door that says “porta”, and so on. This way, every time you see the object, you will be visually reminded of the word for it in Portuguese and the association will help you remember.

3. Find a conversation buddy.
Lessons are a good way to learn the theory of a language, but to truly get used to conversing in Portuguese the best thing to do is find a friend or neighbour who you can practice talking with. Invite them over for lunch and a chat, and practice your conversational skills on them, and ask them to correct you and help you improve. If they are learning English, perhaps you can repay the favour?
These are just a few extra ways that you can improve your Portuguese language skills while living at your real estate in Portugal, outside of any lessons you might be taking.

Learning the language before moving to your property in Portugal is very helpful, and here are some tips to improve your learning.
