Finding a Chicago apartment for rent isn’t as difficult as you may think, in fact it can be quite simple. When beginning your apartment search it’s recommended that you visit a few neighborhoods on your own. It would be a good idea to check out some local attractions, such as restaurants, coffee shops and other local attractions. You can also work with an agent who has knowledge of the Chicago apartment market and the city as a whole. Also, look for opinions from people who have searched for apartments in Chicago first hand.

If you have the luxury of visiting neighborhoods that you are considering, I would definitely take the time to do so. If you are into working out, and this plays a big role in your free time, get a free pass from a local gym. If coffee is your thing, Chicago offers several neighborhoods with tons of coffee shops. If transportation is your major concern, take public transportation to see if the distance and time needed to travel would work for you. Overall, just check out different neighborhoods. Information for many neighborhoods is available on-line as well.

Another great resource for you to utilize is the assistance of a leasing agent, a knowledgeable agent. The Chicago apartment market is flooded with leasing agents. Make sure you deal with one that really knows the city. If an agent needs a GPS system in the city of Chicago, they probably don’t know the city and aren’t experts in the Chicago Real Estate market in general. Ask questions! Any agent that is helping you should know about the deposit, move-in fees, maintenance information etc… Agents should also be able to give you information on transportation options, whether public transportation or information on express ways or local street routes. Again ask questions!

Get opinions from people that know first hand, not what they’ve heard. A person living in Omaha, Nebraska that has never visited Chicago is probably not a good source for a reliable opinion. If a person visited Chicago and has only visited Lakeview and Lincoln Park tells you that all other neighborhoods are dangerous, don’t take their opinion. Lastly, if a person with a 70 lbs dog tells you they found an apartment in Lincoln Park for $400 with no deposit and a free month, they’re probably from another planet.

If you get a chance visit some neighborhoods on your own, work with a knowledgeable agent and get opinions from viable sources with first hand experience. If you follow these simple steps it should make your search for a Chicago apartment much easier.
