When my spouse and I made the decision to move from Orange County, California, to Provo, Utah, I was initially devastated. We both felt strongly it was the right thing to do, but I loved the urban environment and all it had to offer. We lived just a hop, skip, and a jump away from Disneyland, and it was a short drive to a number of famous beaches.
This early devastation makes it difficult to believe that after just a year in Utah, I have entirely fallen in love with this state. I wouldn’t go back if you paid me a million bucks! So what is so special about this place, and why would you want to live here, too?
Well, consider something absolutely basic when it comes to survival–the cost of living. The major cities in the state of Utah consistently rank lower than the national average–year after year–when it comes to the cost of living.
Research also shows that Utah ranks fifth in the nation for states with high economic freedom, part of which includes availability of jobs, which continues even in these difficult times. Not only does Utah as a state have a low unemployment rate, there is actually consistent job growth in many cities.
Utah as a state has a very low crime rate, particularly violent crime. Furthermore, the state’s government is also ranked as one that is highly likely to support citizens’ constitutional rights, and as our federal government grows out of control, this can be very valuable.
For those who enjoy both winter and summer sports, the Beehive State is one that offers countless ski lodges and ski runs to accompany them. You just have to step into your backyard for ultimate skiing and snowboarding retreats rather than spend tons of extra cash on a family getaway.
Plus, for the spring and summer months, the whole state offers hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails as well as rivers for rafting, tubing, and sport fishing. If you love the great outdoors like my spouse and I do, then you will love the conveniences of the city and the lovely escape into nature juxtaposed all over–from north to south.
Utah is also a wonderful place to get an education–both primary and secondary. Whether you are concerned for your children in the classroom or you’re hoping to further your own education, Utah might be the place for you. Utah has one of the highest proportions of revenue devoted to public education, particularly for high school.
There are several state-operated universities, not to mention the privately-run Brigham Young University, which is ranked favorably in multiple disciplines–from their undergraduate business program to their renowned law school.
These are just a few of the reasons why I have fallen in love with Utah–and reasons you should consider if you would like to move here. I am just having trouble thinking of reasons why NOT to move here nope, I just can’t think of any.
