Alabama is a diverse state, with many great cities and towns to live in. One of those cities is Birmingham, Alabama, a hub of business and play in the Jones Valley.

Birmingham is a great place to live and Alabama real estate continues to remain steady in a decidedly unsteady economy. If you’re thinking of relocating, Birmingham deserves a second look. With its small town charm yet big city amenities, you can enjoy the best of both worlds in this exciting city.

Birmingham, Alabama was founded in 1871 by Alabama real estate professionals who wanted to sell property near the planned but not yet built crossing of the Alabama railroads. These enterprising real estate professionals operated from a trading pose and country store.

The land was rich in minerals, including iron, coal and limestone, all which are used to make steel. In fact, Birmingham is the only place in the world where you can find all of these minerals together. The real estate founders decided to name the town Birmingham, after one of England’s most prosperous cities, hoping to draw more settlers there with the comparison.

After the 1900’s, Birmingham became a bustling, high rise business metropolis exactly in line with the real estate professional’s dreams.

Today, the steel industry continues to play a large role in Birmingham’s economy. Some of the United States’ largest steel companies are headquartered here, employing many people who choose to live in Birmingham.

Furthermore, Birmingham now enjoys a bustling medical research and biotechnology trade through the University of Alabama. The University of Alabama is Birmingham’s biggest employer, generating about 20,000 jobs. Communication companies are not uncommon here, including Bell South, and Birmingham also enjoys a financial presence from the headquarters of Wachovia bank.

Birmingham is considered the cultural capital of Alabama, and has access to galleries, ballets, operas and symphonies in the area. The other entertainment in Birmingham centers on the nightlife, particularly near the Lakeview area. Birmingham hosts a number of festivals, including the famed Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival that draws filmmakers from the world around.

Birmingham is a great alternative lifestyle in sleepy Alabama. With its bustling financial and research based economy, along with its world class amenities and great real estate opportunities, it’s worth it to take a second look at this classic southern city.

Enjoying both ends of the spectrum of rural life paired with city living, you can be sure that you’ll love Birmingham.
